Personal finance and taxation expert, MBA INSEAD graduate. Specialized in salary calculation and social security contributions analysis. Mottalib founded German Salary Calculator to give everyone in Germany (whether employee, freelancer, or expat) free access to accurate salary and tax calculations based on official BMF formulas.
German Salary Calculator provides free, accurate, and easy-to-understand online calculators for salary, taxes, and personal finances in Germany. Our goal is to give every employee, freelancer, and saver in Germany a quick, reliable overview of their financial situation, especially expats navigating the German tax system for the first time.
Understanding the German Tax System
The German tax and social security system is one of the most complex in the world. For employees, the difference between gross salary (Bruttogehalt) and net salary (Nettogehalt) is determined by multiple tax and social insurance components that interact in intricate ways. Without a solid understanding of these mechanics, it is nearly impossible to estimate your actual take-home pay — whether you are negotiating a salary, switching jobs, or relocating to Germany.
Income Tax (Lohnsteuer)
Income tax is the largest deduction for most employees. It is withheld by the employer as a prepayment on annual income tax and remitted directly to the tax office (Finanzamt). Germany applies a progressive tax rate: the marginal rate increases with income. For 2026, the entry tax rate is 14%, the top marginal rate is 42%, and income above 277,826 euros per year is taxed at the "wealth tax rate" of 45%.
Your income tax depends heavily on your tax class (Steuerklasse). Germany uses six tax classes (I through VI) that reflect marital status and income distribution within a household. Single employees are typically assigned to tax class I, while married couples can choose between class III/V or IV/IV combinations. Our calculators support all six tax classes and compute income tax based on the current official BMF calculation guidelines (Programmablaufplan).
Solidarity Surcharge (Solidaritätszuschlag)
The solidarity surcharge ("Soli") is 5.5% of your income tax. However, since 2021, it only applies to higher earners. For the vast majority of employees, the Soli has been effectively eliminated through generous exemption thresholds. Our calculator automatically checks whether you exceed the threshold for 2026 and computes the partial or full surcharge accordingly.
Church Tax (Kirchensteuer)
Members of a tax-collecting religious community (such as the Protestant or Catholic Church) pay church tax on top of income tax. The rate is 8% of income tax in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, and 9% in all other federal states. Our calculators let you select your federal state and compute church tax accordingly. If you are not a member of a tax-collecting religion, you can set church tax to zero.
Social Security Contributions (Sozialversicherungsbeiträge)
In addition to taxes, significant social security contributions are deducted from your gross salary. These are shared equally between employee and employer. The four pillars of German social insurance are:
- Health Insurance (Krankenversicherung): The general contribution rate is 14.6% of gross salary (split equally). Each health insurance fund charges an additional individual surcharge (Zusatzbeitrag), which our calculator also accounts for. The contribution ceiling (Beitragsbemessungsgrenze) for 2026 is 66,150 euros per year — salary above this threshold is not subject to health insurance contributions.
- Long-term Care Insurance (Pflegeversicherung): The contribution rate is 3.4% (4.0% for childless employees aged 23 or older). The contribution ceiling matches health insurance.
- Pension Insurance (Rentenversicherung): The contribution rate is 18.6% (split equally). The contribution ceiling is 96,600 euros per year (unified for East and West Germany since 2025).
- Unemployment Insurance (Arbeitslosenversicherung): The contribution rate is 2.6% (split equally). The contribution ceiling matches pension insurance.
How Our Gross-to-Net Calculator Works
Our Brutto-Netto-Rechner computes your net salary in three steps that mirror the actual payroll process:
Step 1 — Calculate income tax: Based on your gross salary, tax class, child allowances, and any tax-free amounts, income tax is calculated according to the official BMF Programmablaufplan. The solidarity surcharge and church tax are also determined.
Step 2 — Calculate social security contributions: The employee's share of health, long-term care, pension, and unemployment insurance is computed, taking into account the applicable contribution ceilings.
Step 3 — Determine net salary: All deductions are subtracted from your gross salary. The result is your net salary — the amount that actually lands in your bank account. We also display a detailed breakdown of each individual item.
All calculations run entirely in your browser. No salary data, tax class selections, or other inputs are transmitted to our servers. You can use the calculator as often as you like, test different scenarios, and instantly see the impact on your take-home pay.
Our Principles
Accuracy
All tax calculations are based on the official calculation guidelines (Programmablaufplan) published by the German Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) and are regularly validated against the official BMF tax calculator. Social insurance contributions reflect the current rates and thresholds for 2026. We test our calculations against hundreds of scenarios to ensure our results match the official BMF calculator.
Privacy
All calculations are performed entirely in your browser. We do not collect, store, or transmit any salary data, tax class selections, or other personal financial information. Your data stays with you. We do not use tracking cookies, and we employ no analytics tools that capture your inputs. Our business model does not rely on selling user data — your privacy matters to us.
Transparency
We disclose all formulas, thresholds, and sources used. Each calculator page includes a detailed breakdown of the calculation and links to official sources (BMF, Destatis, Gesetze im Internet). Transparency also means that we clearly label all advertising and affiliate links, with no hidden conflicts of interest.
Free of Charge
All calculators on German Salary Calculator are free to use without registration. The site is funded through advertising and selected affiliate partnerships, which are always clearly identified as such. There is no premium version, no paywall, and no feature restrictions.
Our Data Sources
The quality of a salary calculator depends entirely on the reliability of its data. We source all tax and social security parameters from official institutions:
- Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) — Official Programmablaufplan for income tax calculation, tax brackets, solidarity surcharge thresholds, basic tax-free allowance
- BMF Tax Calculator — Official reference calculator used to validate our results
- Deutsche Rentenversicherung — Contribution rates and ceilings for pension and unemployment insurance, social security reference values
- GKV-Spitzenverband — Individual additional contribution rates for statutory health insurance
- Gesetze im Internet (EStG) — Income Tax Act as the legal basis for all tax calculations
- Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) — Average salaries, consumer price index, and macroeconomic indicators
Methodology and Quality Assurance
Our calculations follow the official Programmablaufplan (PAP) published by the BMF, which is updated annually and serves as the foundation for all payroll software in Germany. The PAP defines the exact sequence of calculation steps, from determining taxable income to applying the tax schedule to accounting for allowances and flat-rate deductions.
Every update goes through a multi-step quality assurance process: First, the new parameters (tax schedule, social security reference values, contribution ceilings) are adopted from official sources. Then, calculation results are systematically validated against the BMF tax calculator. Only after successful validation are the new values published on the website.
Who Is German Salary Calculator For?
Our calculators are designed for anyone earning income in Germany or planning to do so:
- Employees: Calculate your net salary before a salary negotiation, a job change, or a pay raise. Compare different tax class combinations as a married couple.
- Career starters: Understand what remains of your first salary after taxes and social contributions. Plan your budget realistically.
- Expats and immigrants: The German tax system differs fundamentally from most other countries. Our calculators help you estimate your net income before relocating and properly evaluate a salary offer from a German employer.
- Employers and HR departments: Calculate the total cost of an employee (employer gross) or check payslips for plausibility.
- Students and working students: Find out how a mini-job or working student position affects your net income.
Updates
At the start of each year, we update all calculators with the latest tax rates, social insurance thresholds, and contribution assessment ceilings. The values currently used for 2026 are displayed on each calculator page. If legislation changes during the year (e.g., adjustment of the basic tax-free allowance, changes in contribution rates), we update our calculators promptly.
